Since the Ryukyu Kingdom period, a sweet potato distilled spirit called "IMUGE." has been brewed among the people of Okinawa using sweet potatoes (Ryukyu sweet potatoes) and brown sugar. By the late Meiji era, the government prohibited private brewing, and this spirit nearly disappeared by the Taisho era. To revive this spirit that has been lost for over a century, four breweries, including Nakijin Brewery, have recently been actively attempting to revive the legendary sweet potato distilled spirit.

IMUGE is neither Awamori nor a type of shochu.
Sweet potato distilled spirits are defined as spirits under the current Japanese sake tax law. This differs from the preparation method of awamori (a type of Japanese dessert). It mainly uses koji, sweet potato and brown sugar as raw materials . Using atmospheric distillation can make the wine taste sweeter and more mellow, with a richer sweet potato aroma in the aftertaste.
